10 Concert Safety Tips to Know

By Brittany Hawes on January 9, 2018

There are many concert safety tips to know. Going to a concert can be one of the most enjoyable experiences you have in life. Concerts are a time for meeting up with friends, making new ones, and bonding over your shared love for an artist’s music. Literally hundreds of people are coming together to celebrate music that they are passionate about in one night or a series of nights where everyday worries can be tossed aside in favor of carefree dancing and applause. However, so many people in one place does mean that anything can happen, which means safety should always be your main priority.

While going to a concert should always be fun, it’s important to still remember your own safety, even during the concert. Concerts attract all kinds of attention and people, both negative and positive. How do you handle drunk people who look ready to throw up on you? What about making sure you return to your car with your new phone in your hands and not in the hands of a pickpocket? In light of the Manchester Arena bombing in May 2017, concertgoers’ safety in case of a bombing is now a bigger concern than it’s ever been.

Even though having fun should be your biggest priority of the night, you can’t afford to throw all cares aside and forget to practice caution. With this in mind, here are 10 concert safety tips to know that will keep you and your group safe and ensure a wonderful night that you will be talking about for the rest of the year.

1. Don’t go alone

You might enjoy going to events that you love on your own or maybe you don’t know anyone else who enjoys this particular artist’s music as much as you do. Don’t let that stop you from reaching out and inviting someone to come along with you to the concert, especially if it’s going to be a big event with a giant crowd of people expected to show up. Having an extra set of eyes to watch out for you and your stuff is a good idea. There really is safety in numbers, plus, going to a concert with people you love to be around can be more fun!

2. Get friends’ and family’s contact info

Make sure you have the contact information of all the people who you came with to the concert with saved into your phone and written down, just in case your phone happens to die during the concert. This way, if you were to get separated from the rest of your group members, all it would take is a quick text or phone call to round everyone up. If your phone does die and you don’t have a certain phone number memorized, having those numbers written down somewhere in your bag means that you can borrow a fellow concertgoer’s phone to make a call to your lost group member.

3. Let others know where you are

If you plan on going to a concert, make sure you tell someone where you are going to be that night. That way, if you found yourself in some kind of trouble, people would know exactly where you are and if they should come and help.

4. Dress appropriately

Among these concert safety tips to know, keeping your health in mind is one of the most crucial! As much as you may want to show off your band’s favorite short-sleeved T-shirt during the concert, if it’s 20 degrees and the concert is being performed outside, that might not be in your best interests that night. Make sure you know what the weather is going to be like the day of the concert and remember the concert’s location so you can dress accordingly.

5. Know where the security guards are

If you see someone behaving suspiciously or you need to report something being stolen, you should know who to turn to. Keep those security guards in your sights for the night, just in case something suspicious is going on that could jeopardize someone’s safety.

6. Decide on a place to meet if you get separated

Before the concert, get together with your group and decided on a meeting place that everyone should head to if you were to get separated during or after the concert. That way, even if someone’s phone were to die, everyone should know to be at the meeting place and you’ll all be able to leave from there after doing a headcount.

7. Know where the emergency exits are

If you get to the concert early enough, be sure to scout around and locate the emergency exits. If something were to happen, have a route planned out in your head on how you will safely make it to the emergency exit and to that meeting place mentioned above.

8. Don’t accept drugs from others

Another one of the concert safety tips to know is to stay away from drugs offered to you by strangers. No matter what kind of drug it is, don’t accept any random drug off of a person you just met. You don’t know what’s in that drug. It could be perfectly safe, but it’s better to say no now than to be sorry later.

9. Wear earplugs to avoid damage to your hearing

Concerts can get LOUD. If you want to protect your ears and avoid damage to your hearing, buy some earplugs from your local pharmacy before the concert and bring them with you that night.

10. Bring a portable charger

You want to make sure you bring one of these with you. Nothing drains your phone’s battery like shooting videos all night and snapping selfies with the other concertgoers. You don’t want to be stranded at the venue with a dead phone, so stash one (or two) of these in your bag the night before the concert.

Concerts are supposed to be an enjoyable experience, but you should never jeopardize your own safety by not being prepared. When you go to a concert during this new year, I hope you’ll keep these concert safety tips to know in mind!
